Goal Setting Process: Principles and Characteristics

Setting goals, whether short-term or long-term, are ultimate ways to provide focus and direction in our lives. The process of goal setting is not a casual effort but a purposeful, explicit process that guides transformation. Along with providing direction, goals also help us to measure if we are succeeding and whether any course corrections need to be made along the way.

Since goal setting process is a conscious effort, one needs to ensure that the goals have all the characteristics needed.

The Top Five Characteristics are Abbreviated as SMART

    1. Begin with writing specific goals as they help to provide precision to the process. Be as specific with facts and data as you can. For instance, instead of writing “achieve business target by end of this quarter”, set goal as “achieve business target of 25 lacs by March 31st “
    2. Second, ensure that your goals are measurable. As mentioned earlier, goals help us to monitor how much have we succeeded. If goals cannot be measured, it will be difficult to assess how well are we doing in achieving it. A goal of “achieve business target of 25 lacs by March 31st “can be easily measured by matching the on-actual numbers with the projections. In case the goal is more subjective, say “Think more positively by the end of June 2020”, then assign a measurable unit to that. How would you measure if you have started thinking more positively? Maybe, get feedback from others or have positive outcomes to situations. So, adding the outcome of the situation or the number of positive feedbacks received can be a measurable approach to a goal.
    3. Third, apart from being specific and measurable, goals should be attainable. it’s good to be ambitious but goals that are not realistic and only ambitious can be demotivating. Such goals, no matter how hard you try, will be difficult to achieve. Check for resources and capability to attain the goal before writing it down. If the adequate resources are not available, then specific and measurable goals may not be achieved.
    4. Fourth step in the goal setting process is to ensure that the goals are relevant and must be aligned to our ambitions and plans for self. When goals are not relevant, we are not motivated enough to achieve it and the focus from it is lost along the way.
    5. Lastly, goals should be time-bound. Giving a deadline increases the sense of urgency to achieve the goal and makes planning effective. When setting deadlines, one must ensure that it is realistic. It should not be too rigid and stringent, and neither should it be too lenient and flexible. Assess the adequate time necessary for achieving the goal and then set the deadline.

Apart from these 5 characteristics, the following principles must be considered:

  • Goals should be of moderate difficulty level. Goals that are either too easy or too difficult do not motivate us.
  • We must write our goals. Just keeping it in our head will make us forget and lose focus from the goals.
  • Although goals are set with its characteristic of being attainable, one shouldn’t be hesitant to ask for help if there is any obstacle in reaching the goals. Therefore, having a plan B and listing back up resources to attain the goal is a good practice
  • Make it a habit to keep checking your progress on the goal and make course corrections whenever necessary. Schedule these review session and make modifications early in the process rather than later (closer to the deadline).

Following these simple principles and characteristics in the goal setting process can help us to be more focused, provide us a direction and transform our lives.

Facts About Goal Setting

Goals are like foundation stones for the success of any business organization. Where goals define and constitute success, which in turn gives direction of purpose to increase the potential for the achievement of success, it would be needless to specify the importance of setting the right goals for the ultimate benefit of any enterprise. However, the goals of a company many a times are misinterpreted with its objectives, aims and missions.

Goals are synonymous to success as it describes the required and desired intent or condition which should be rightly followed for the ultimate prosperity and success of that organization. Where organizational goals keep revising from time to time, the purpose, mission and functioning of the organization remain intact.

Let’s take a look at some hard facts about goal setting

  1. Specific, realistic goals work best- While setting the goals for the effective management and success of an enterprise, make sure that the set goals are practical, realistic and easily achievable. Goals which are defined out of proportion and are unpractical generally tend to lose their effectiveness and charm over a short period of time. The best, therefore, is to set more realistic, specific and attainable goals which can be stuck to for the ultimate benefit of the company.
  2. It takes time for a change to become an established habit- When goals are set for an organization, they do not start showing results from the next day onward. Any new change or resolution takes time to adapt and go down well with the system, till it becomes a regular habit. So, give your goals some time to settle down and be recognized well within the association, before you start working on its achievements.
  3. Repeating a goal makes it stick- As an individual, one needs a reminder and a boost everyday to work effectively and efficiently towards the achievement of one’s pre-set goals. One should keep reminding oneself of his goals in life, day in day out, by calling it aloud to oneself so as to remain focused on them, thereby making the brain work in the direction of achieving them successfully.
  4. Pleasing other people doesn’t work- A goal should not be focused and worked upon just to satisfy or please some other person. Your goals should belong to you alone, and not be a reflection of someone else’s desires. Remember, you can remain motivated and determined towards achievement of your goals only if they specify your own hidden desires, and not if it is being done out of an obligation to a third party.
  5. Roadblocks do not mean failure- No one makes it to the top in just one go. Slipping-up is a part of the learning process and the mantra behind climbing the ladder of success to reach the ultimate goal point. So, keep trying even if you fall, by getting back to track every time you miss your goal, by retraining your grey cells towards a newer and better way of thinking.

Goal Setting

Goal Setting plays a pivotal role in determining the success of an enterprise. When we talk about goal setting setup, it should be clearly comprehended and understood that goals which let you focus on your present day-to-day functioning and behavior are considered as realistic and approachable goals, as against goals which are highly inflated and only extend into the future operations of an organization.

The whole and sole purpose of setting a goal should be to give your targets a definite shape so that you can concentrate and focus on their successful completion and achievement, which have now been defined in clear cut terms. It enables you to get into the right frame of mind by stepping ahead to accomplish something which would lead to your success and prosperity in future.

Once an effective and realistic goal has been set and a definite target has been chosen, all your activities and plans of action should revolve around fulfilling and reaching that ultimate goal, set by you. Goals give your dreams a definite direction but a string of actions has to follow thereafter to hit the bull’s eye and convert those dreams into real incidences of success and achievement. A very common example is when we head to reach a particular place and start driving, not aware of the destination; we either look up a map or ask for directions from others before randomly starting off to reach there. Similar is the case with setting goals in business and accomplishing them for a successful, bigger and better life ahead.

Setting a time limit to achieve your goals is a good idea to keep you motivated and in the upfront to complete them quickly. However, there is another face to the coin as well. Setting a time limit might even lead to de-motivation and deviation from the target if one is unable to keep up and cope with the running time in hand. The best alternative to this problem would be to set smaller secondary goals which should ultimately combine together to achieve that one final and prominent goal. Setting mini goals lay the foundation for climbing the ladder of success slowly, steadily and effectively and make your drive through the road of success a smooth one.

This way, even the most time-sensitive goals can be accomplished with comfort and ease, finally enabling you to come out with flying colors in your endeavours.
